Sprigs

Since it opened in 1998, Sprigs has become. Like the fresh produce we source from the best suppliers in Durban , Sprigs is a seasonal restaurant. Our food is defined not only by the seasons of the years, but also by the seasons of our moods. What do we feel like cooking today? Perhaps there's a loaf of health bread in the oven and we can eat it with a salad of grilled fennel bulbs. From our buffet lunches to tea or coffee with one of our popular cakes, we are a café and food store for all seasons, driven by a passion for food and a love of feeding people. Join us for breakfast or lunch. Just step up to the counter and ask for a little bit of what you fancy this season.

Sprigs also incorporates a food store which is our ultimate delight. We get to scour the country for new and interesting ingredients, and then place them on the shelves in our shop so they're close by when we need them. Of course we also sell all this great stuff. From jams to sushi rice, biscuits to truffle oil, indulgent to organic, it's a constantly growing range. We recently added appliances and cookware to the mix as well, so you will find Kitchen Aid, Le Creuset and other top brands on our shelves too.

For years we've been offering recipes and advice to customers who've needed a little help with a dinner party or family gathering. Our new demonstration kitchen allows us to offer regular courses and demonstrations. We constantly strive to be innovative in our course construction, offering our own unique take on contemporary and classic cooking. Fresh Kitchen Inspiration – The Book

The first in a range of Sprigs cookbooks is now available in the store and from selected bookshops countrywide. Sprigs: Fresh Kitchen Inspiration sells for R195 and is packed from cover to cover with some of our favourite recipes. It covers everything from a quick snack to a fancy dinner party. The book is basically designed around a typical day in our busy lives and provides recipes for everything from breakfast or lunch to book club evenings and big functions. For us, it's all in a day's work.

Sprigs also publishes a range of Recipe Sheets in which we share recipes around a particular theme. We've always wanted to share our passion for cooking and our recipes with people and this, like the book, is our chance to do it. Look out for new themed Sprigs Sheets – we produce six each year.

Profile

Clare and Fiona Ras both studied cookery at Durban 's foremost school of food and wine. After completing their studies, they went their separate ways, each working in the UK and then in South Africa in kitchens both in Durban and Cape Town before joining forces to open Sprigs in 2000. Since then the twins have built a remarkable business centred around their unquenchable passion for food. Their formidable reputation has been built by numerous magazine features and the steady growth of a legion of fans of their style of fusion cooking. The girls recently added a demonstration kitchen to their Kloof premises and have been inundated with bookings for the various courses they offer.
