GASTRONOMICA OFFERS THOUGHT FOR FOOD

Moments Communications and Events

Gastronomica is a week long food festival to be held in Knysna from 23 Sept – 1 Oct 2005. The common theme for the week is based on the “Slow Food Ethics”. This concept is the opposite of “fast food’ which has been responsible for many health related illnesses that could be prevented through proper nutrition.

The festival is aimed at promoting awareness among the population that preparing and eating food should be an enjoyable experience. Meals should be prepared with love and care using organic, fresh ingredients ensuring optimal nutrition and taste. Preparing and eating food should be a pleasurable experience that involves the whole family; this also improves communication, bonds within the family unit and joins communities, cultures and nations.

Our “real quality” life-style has deteriorated over the last few decades due partly to the information age. People are too busy working and rushing from place to place that they neglect to take proper care of themselves. Convenience foods are not the answer and do not provide natural nutrition, lack vitamins and minerals and are full of harmful chemicals such as artificial preservatives, flavourants and colourants. The severe increase in the incidence of heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, eczema, allergies etc has been directly attributed to the nutritional status of the individual. Many diseases could be prevented by proper nutrition, rather than in hindsight cured with chemicals.

One of the events taking place on Tues, 27 September 2005 is a fresh and organic market presented by artisans that have carried on the traditional way of producing food in a more holistic and natural manner. Märkus Farbinger, co-organiser of GASTRONOMICA says: ”This practice has invariable been passed down from generation to generation through the centuries and has stood the test of time because of its infallibility.” Artisans from all over the Garden Route will be displaying and selling their produce/products, educating consumers in the use of fresh ingredients, preservative/colourant free products, organic growing of vegetables, free-range dairy, chickens and beef, organic wines and liqueurs.

A fresh, organically prepared lunch will be available while informal, thought provoking but informative talks will be held throughout the day, given by these artisans who are motivated to create awareness of their natural products and a more wholesome lifestyle.

This display will be held at The Culinary Shed, at Thesen Harbour Town, Knysna and entrance is free to the public.
