Gastronomica is a unique concept celebrating good food as the essence of life, as an integral part of enjoyment, culture and festivity. The first celebration, to be known as Gastronomica 2005, will take place in Knysna from September 23rd till October 1st, during the school holidays.

Gastronomica will be a celebration of all that is extraordinary, good and honest in food and wine, and will be presented with passion, love and enjoyment. A wide range of events, designed to appeal to all visitors and locals, will be staged all over Knysna. The organizers envisage working with major national and international gourmet groups and individuals including Gordon Blea, Slow Food, The Culinary Institute of America and the British chef and food writer Prue Leith.

Gastronomica will annually present a single festival programme. The purpose of the festival is to entertain, educate, enrich and unite people around food. However, the message of training, uplifting, excellence and quality will remain central.
