WHO IS GARTH STROEBEL? |
Garth is not only a true South African but he is actually a Garden Route Local who went to school at Outeniqua High School, George, South Africa. Garth is a mentor to some of the top chefs in South Africa. He is demanding, particular and a perfectionist, yet all who have worked with him value being taught the basic classic principals, and a passion for their profession. Many of his trainees are now executive chefs in their own right. Garth began his apprenticeship at the Edward Hotel in '73 and continued to the Mount Nelson. He is the first born, bred and trained SA chef to be appointed as the executive chef of a 5-star establishment when he joined the President Hotel in '85. In '90 he returned to the Mount Nelson Hotel and in '98 he was promoted to the position of Corporate Chef for the African collection of Orient-Express Hotels, which includes the Mount Nelson Hotel, The Westcliff & Gametrackers. Garth has traveled the world, making connections, sharing ideas with the greatest chefs and always coming back home with new influences. He is a staunch supporter of South African food and ingredients, and published his recipe book 'Modern South African Cuisine' in 2005. Garth is a seasoned international competitor, both as an individual and as the leader of Team SA. He has received many medals and awards for culinary excellence and contribution to culinary standards in South Africa.
